There are several words which spring to mind when I think of Sri Lanka. Golden beaches, crashing waves, misty mountains, mighty elephants, spotty leopards, playful dolphins, a past steeped in history, and warm local smiles. With so many wonderful varied activities to do Sri Lanka truly has it all. Check out my reasons why Sri Lanka is absolutely brilliant… Then book your flight ASAP.
One word to describe the food in Sri Lanka. A-MAZING. Everywhere you go, you’ll find delicious food such as seafood pulled straight from the Indian Ocean and curries made with the freshest natural ingredients and the most aromatic spices. Just dive in, forget about that diet regime, and eat to your heart’s content.
Never ending golden beaches stretching out as far as you can see, secluded spots where the most frequent visitors are the turtles and exotic birds, or areas dedicated to those travellers looking for a beach-side party. Whatever you’re after Sri Lanka has an abundance of beaches just waiting to be explored and, more importantly, relaxed upon. My advice? Rent a bike and explore all those that take your fancy, you’ll be surprised at the secret spots you uncover along the way.
Sri Lanka is home to some of the most diverse and exotic wildlife on the planet. From whale, dolphin and elephant spotting to leopards and cheeky monkeys, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped foot into a David Attenborough documentary. In fact, there are 22 National Parks covering vast swathes of Sri Lankan countryside so grab your binoculars, your camera, a great tour guide and get searching!
While the culture, history and wildlife are the biggest draw to most, there’s another main attraction that attracts one group in particular, the surfers. With a variety of waves, warm water, and reliable Indian Ocean swells, Sri Lanka is a beginner surfers paradise and an experienced surfers playground.
You’ll be blown away by the friendliness of the people in Sri Lanka. Their kindness and honesty is really something special and they’re always willing to go that extra mile to help you have the best time possible in their country.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Sri Lanka may be small but it packs a big punch when it comes to history. So much so that it boasts 8 UNESCO Heritage Sites just waiting for you to discover—ruins, temples, monasteries, mountains, stunning viewpoints and endless wilderness areas. Exploring these sites is the best way to learn all about the culture and heritage of this fascinating country.
Many people say the train journeys in Sri Lanka are some of the most beautiful in the world. I think you’ll agree. With their old-world charm it’s like stepping back into time. Combine that with stunning views of lush jungle, rural villages, terraced tea plantations and rugged mountain tops and you’ve got yourself a pretty magnificent journey.
